Basic Introduction
Thermal Expansion tanks are used to help eliminate the expansion forces caused by heating and cooling of pressurized systems water. The tank air pressure must be field adjusted for proper system operation. It is important to properly charge the tank with enough pressure which equals the cold water supply pressure, prior to filling the system. Failure to properly pressurize the tank will cause the cold supply water to expand the bladder, greatly reduce the expansion capabilities. The heavy duty butyl rubber bladder keeps the system water separate from the tank, eliminating tank corrosion. The Aqua Leader/Dezhi Steel Tank Expansion tanks are designed for commercial heating applications. As the water is heated, it expands into the bladder and pushes against the air cushion. As the system cools, the pressure in the tank pushes the system water back into the piping, maintaining system pressure.

There are two main types of Expansion Vessel dependent on what application you have. You will normally find a Red Vessel (Heating Vessels) to be used on a Sealed System Heating application whilst the most common use for a Blue Vessel or White Vessel (Potable Vessels) would be in a potable application such as an Unvented Water Heater or a Pumped System.
Potable Expansion Vessels are built from different materials than Heating Expansion Vessels to ensure that the water is contaminant free and safe for human consumption. Expansion Vessels operate on the basis that the internal chamber is separated by a rubber membrane, inside this membrane sits the water and surrounding this sits a pocket of air--For some models are filled with nitrogen gas up to 99.9% purified. As the water inside the sealed system is heated the water pressure increases, as water is non compressible the air inside the air chamber of the Expansion Vessel will become compressed thus leaving the system safe from over pressurization. As water can increase by 4.5% volume when heated from 0-100 DegC an Expansion Vessel is a vital part of any sealed heating system.
Expansion Vessels can be supplied with a replaceable or fixed membrane depending on your preference and the pressure within the Vessel is set using a Schrader Valve just like you would find on a bicycle tyre.
Expansion Vessels are commonly used on pumped systems to remove the requirements of a continuous pump. This works as the user will set a low and high pressure on the pump settings, when the water pressure reaches the lowest setting the pump will engage and fill the Expansion Vessel to the high pressure point and stop. Once this cycle has been completed the Expansion Vessel puts the stored water under pressure ensuring higher pressure water. This will continue until the Expansion Vessels pressure drops to the lower point and the pump starts its cycle again.

Description
An accumulator tank is an important part of any pressurised water system that includes a pressure-controlled or jet pump. Some modern computer-controlled pumps may not require an accumulator tank. Fitted close to the discharge port of the pressurised water pump, the accumulator tank acts as a pressure buffer, ensuring a smooth flow of water from the outlets. Without an accumulator tank, the pump is liable to switch itself rapidly on and off whenever its flow rate exceeds demand from the outlets. Constant on-off cycling leads to increased pump wear and unnecessary battery drain. The accumulator tank stops this rapid cycling, resulting in smooth water flow (important in showers) and extended pump life
An accumulator tank is much the same as an expansion tank however the pressure of the membrane should be set at a level just below the maximum pressure of the pump. The main sifference is that the tank stores the water pressure to avoid the pump system cycling (switching on and off frequently). An accumulator can also be used before the pump system to act as a buffer tank (sometimes referred to as a header tank)

Why use Nitrogen Instead of Compressed Air?
The oxygen in compressed air permeates through the membrane, reducing the pre charge pressure. During
normal function, oxygen oxidizes the membrane in the vessel, causing under-inflation and deterioration of the rubber.
Dry nitrogen by comparison maintains proper inflation pressure longer, will not corrode the inside of the vessel
and extends valve and expansion vessel life. Industry research indicates that oxidative aging is one of
the primary causes of decreased vessel life. Oxidative aging that is caused by the diffusion of oxygen from the
pressurized air cavity of the vessel to the outside atmosphere.
Tests have shown that if vessels are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in failure.
How does Nitrogen help?
While both nitrogen and oxygen can permeate rubber,nitrogen does it much more slowly. It might take 6 months
to lose 2psi with nitrogen, compared to just a month with air. And nitrogen is far less reactive. It doesn't cause rust
or corrosion on steel or aluminum, and it doesn't degrade the rubber seal used in the pre charge valve extending valve core life and help prevent core leaks.
