Why do I need an accumulator tank?


An accumulator tank is an important part of any pressurised water system that includes a pressure-controlled pump. (Some modern computer-controlled pumps may not require an accumulator tank) Fitted close to the discharge port of the pressurised water pump, the accumulator tank acts as a pressure buffer, ensuring a smooth flow of water from the outlets. Without an accumulator tank, the pump is liable to switch itself rapidly on and off whenever its flow rate exceeds demand from the outlets. Constant on-off cycling leads to increased pump wear and unnecessary battery drain. The accumulator tank stops this rapid cycling, resulting in smooth water flow (important in showers) and an extended pump life.

Where do I fit an accumulator tank?

The accumulator tank should be fitted in the discharge line from the pump, as close as possible to the pump itself (see diagram). The tank will serve no useful function if fitted in the pump inlet pipework.

How do I install an accumulator tank?

The tank should be installed in a dry place. Tanks may be fitted in any attitude, vertical or horizontal. The tank may be secured by stout strapping or by stainless steel bands, or it may be mounted in a wooden cradle. The steel tank casing is robust, but care should be taken during installation not to scratch, dent or puncture it. A special bracket mounting kit (contact Tom for details) is available for the 2 to  40 liter capacity models.

What size of accumulator tank do I need?

This depends on the number of outlets in your system, their frequency of use, on the flow rate of the pump and on the space available. The larger the tank, the less frequently the pump will start, and the longer it will run before stopping. Contact Tom Or Other Guys From Taizhou Tianyang Electrical Co., Ltd.  if you require advice.

At what pressure should I set the accumulator tank?

The pressure in the tank is adjusted by means of the air valve in the closed end. The tank is supplied with an internal pressure of about 2.8 bar (35 psi). Reduce this pressure to 2 - 3 psi below the cut-in pressure of the pump (refer to pump instructions for details). This pressure adjustment is best done before installation of the tank, using a car-type pressure gauge to determine when the required pressure is reached, as follows:

A. Depress the central pin of the Schrader valve with your finger, to release gas

B. Release gas a little at a time, until the pressure is correct

C. If you release too much gas by mistake, air may be pumped back in with a hand - or foot-pump.

WARNING

Make sure that there is adequate ventilation when setting or adjusting pressure in an accumulator tank. Nitrogen is nontoxic, but oxygen levels may be reduced in confined spaces.


If the tank pressure requires adjustment after installation, ensure first that the pump is switched off and that an outlet is open, so that there is no pressure in the system. Then regulate the pressure as indicated above. Check the accumulator tank performance in this way every 3/6 months,depends on air valve you have choosen from us, and adjust the pressure if necessary.

There are two main types of Expansion Vessel dependent on what application you have. You will normally find a Red Vessel (Heating Vessels) to be used on a Sealed System Heating application whilst the most common use for a Blue Vessel or White Vessel (Potable Vessels) would be in a potable application such as an Unvented Water Heater or a Pumped System.

Potable Expansion Vessels are built from different materials than Heating Expansion Vessels to ensure that the water is contaminant free and safe for human consumption. Expansion Vessels operate on the basis that the internal chamber is separated by a rubber membrane, inside this membrane sits the water and surrounding this sits a pocket of air--For some models are filled with nitrogen gas up to 99.9% purified. As the water inside the sealed system is heated the water pressure increases, as water is non compressible the air inside the air chamber of the Expansion Vessel will become compressed thus leaving the system safe from over pressurization. As water can increase by 4.5% volume when heated from 0-100 DegC an Expansion Vessel is a vital part of any sealed heating system.

Expansion Vessels can be supplied with a replaceable or fixed membrane depending on your preference and the pressure within the Vessel is set using a Schrader Valve just like you would find on a bicycle tyre.

Expansion Vessels are commonly used on pumped systems to remove the requirements of a continuous pump. This works as the user will set a low and high pressure on the pump settings, when the water pressure reaches the lowest setting the pump will engage and fill the Expansion Vessel to the high pressure point and stop. Once this cycle has been completed the Expansion Vessel puts the stored water under pressure ensuring higher pressure water. This will continue until the Expansion Vessels pressure drops to the lower point and the pump starts its cycle again.

Description:

An expansion vessel, pre-charged with nitrogen instead of compressed air, to meet the requirements of most heating systems and for use with potable water. The Expansion vessels for potable water systems are manufactured to meet the requirements of PED 97/23/EC Directive and BS EN 13831:2007 'Closed expansion vessels with built in diaphragm for installation in water'.

Why use Nitrogen Instead of Compressed Air?

The oxygen in compressed air permeates through the membrane, reducing the pre charge pressure. During
normal function, oxygen oxidizes the membrane in the vessel, causing under-inflation and deterioration of the rubber.

Dry nitrogen by comparison maintains proper inflation pressure longer, will not corrode the inside of the vessel
and extends valve and expansion vessel life. Industry research indicates that oxidative aging is one of
the primary causes of decreased vessel life. Oxidative aging that is caused by the diffusion of oxygen from the
pressurized air cavity of the vessel to the outside atmosphere.

Tests have shown that if vessels are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in failure.

How does Nitrogen help?

While both nitrogen and oxygen can permeate rubber,nitrogen does it much more slowly. It might take 6 months
to lose 2psi with nitrogen, compared to just a month with air. And nitrogen is far less reactive. It doesn't cause rust
or corrosion on steel or aluminum, and it doesn't degrade the rubber seal used in the pre charge valve extending valve core life and help prevent core leaks.
